House of Reps warn Governors to pay N18,000 minimum wage

This is coming on the heels of report that the Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha allegedly sacked 3,000 workers.

The House of Representatives in Abuja, has asked the Governors to cut their security votes, and manage their spending, instead of threatening to sack workers because they cannot pay N18,000 minimum wage.
This is coming on the heels of report that the Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha allegedly sacked 3,000 workers.
Speaking to Punch Newspapers, the chairman, House committee on civil societies, Mr. Peter Akpatason said “Any governor who says he cannot pay the minimum wage is deceiving himself because there is the Minimum Wage Act.
“It will be an infraction of the law not to pay. Most governors have ignored internally generated revenue because of the chunk of money coming from Abuja (Federation Account).”
He also said “What are they doing with their security votes? What about the leakages and the cost of the projects they put in their budgets?

“If you are wasting money and you don’t manage the resources in your state, the workers are not to blame.
“They must think of creative ways to generate revenue on their own.”
The House of Representatives is the lower house of the country's bicameral National Assembly, with 360 members.
